A cleft lip and cleft palate are an opening or split occurs in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate) or both. This birth defect happens when facial structures that are developing in an unborn baby don’t close completely. A cleft lip or palate is immediately identifiable at an ultrasound or at birth.
Cleft lip and cleft palate conditions are common as isolated birth defects but are also associated with many inherited genetic conditions or syndromes. While a cleft lip and/or cleft palate can be very disheartening, there are surgical options to help achieve a more normal appearance with minimal scarring.
Infants who grow up with a cleft lip or palate tend to have some challenges, depending on the severity of their condition. Some children with clefts experience dental problems, eating problems, speech difficulties, ear infections and hearing loss; some may face social, emotional and behavioral problems.
